SEN, school life and aspirations

SEN, school life and aspirations is a briefing looking at how teenagers with persistent SEN (those with identified SEN at both primary and secondary school) feel about school, their academic ability and their future educational and occupational aspirations.

The briefing was produced for the Educational and occupational aspirations of young people: influences and outcomes project and is parter a wider body of research looking at how young people from different backgrounds get on as they move through primary and secondary school and then on to university and work.

The findings highlighted in the briefing point to the lower academic and occupational aspirations held by children and teenagers identified as having SEN in both primary and secondary school, compared to other children with similar academic ability but not identified as having SEN.

The research team say some differences are substantial and have the potential to cast a long shadow.
